Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park

WILSON, NORTH CAROLINA

Design Dimension was excited to be a part of the team to help complete the vision of the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park in Wilson, NC. We were asked to develop the outdoor signage and wayfinding plan for the park. We worked with the Downtown Development team and Wilson Parks and Recreation to create a cohesive set of signs-- ranging from small identifiers for each whirligig, large maps, and interpretive rail graphics.

Our team was inspired by the detailed work of Vollis Simpson. We did not want to draw visitors eyes away from the kinetic whirligigs, but instead help visitors understand what they are and how they work. The experience begins with a large entrance sign designed and fabricated by our team, based on a logo created for the park.  Sprinkled throughout the park visitors will find three different rail graphics with maps to help identify each whirligig and point visitors to the best view points in the park. There are also three light up stations to highlight the spinning sculptures at night. The park represents the beginning of a series of new developments in downtown Wilson, truly a sight to see!

Design Dimension designed the exhibits in the Museum and Gift Shop.
