Exploring The Discovery Room at NCBG

December 28, 2018

In 2017, the folks at North Carolina Botanical Garden (NCBG) approached our team about an upfit to their

"Discovery Room", a place where children of all ages and families can explore the natural world up close.

An initial sketch we completed included ideas of natural scene-setting murals, a giant tree build-out, suspended birds, unique floor changes, a reading nook, a garden box, and modular furniture...

After discussing feedback with our client, we decided to reach out to local artist Annie Runyon for the development of our scene setting murals.  Annie is a renowned nature artist and children's book author based in North Carolina.  With her approval, we scanned two of her original Piedmont landscape pieces and produced them on large scale wall paper to cover an entire wall. The NCBG staff also created an interactive search game where visitors can identify wildlife within these landscapes...

The furniture includes modular tables and chairs, benches, and storage shelves (communityplaythings.com). The furniture seamlessly flows with the two carpeted areas to create "spaces" of play in the open room.

Our custom build-outs included a giant tree represented in our initial sketch and a 6-foot-tall felt wall for children to create their own landscapes.  The tree build-out is floor-to-ceiling and consists of a bark-textured trunk and a graphic canopy that overlooks the reading nook...

NCBG's newly renovated Discovery Room re-opened in Fall of 2018 and is available to all visitors.  Bring your kids and enjoy all of the new interactives and the bright colors that illuminate the space.
