Billy Graham & His Remarkable Journey of Faith
Raleigh, North Carolina
The Story of a North Carolina Native
The Billy Graham and His Remarkable Journey of Faith exhibit explores the life of native North Carolinian and evangelist, Billy Graham. While many people are familiar with his name, they may not know that he was raised on a small dairy farm outside of Charlotte, NC. From there, Billy Graham went on to meet world leaders and speak in front of millions of people in the US and abroad. The exhibit was on display at the North Carolina Museum of History from November 2015 to July 2016.
A Focus on Technology
Visitors learned about his impact on global issues as well as his strong connection to the state of North Carolina. A common theme throughout the exhibit was the Billy Graham Evangelical Association’s (BGEA) use of technology over time to spread Billy’s message. Billy Graham has preached to more people in live audiences than anyone else in history — nearly 215 million people in more than 185 countries and territories. He could even be considered one of the original users of “social media” reaching hundreds of millions more using early communication methods including print, radio, TV, and the Internet. With all of these media sources available, we incorporated the appropriate technologies into the exhibit, from audio head sets, television screens, projected film, and iPads.
Along with the extensive use of technology, there are many other mechanical interactions including: a “talking ice box”, an “inside a crusade” wall with windows containing different artifacts, and special vignettes to help tell the stories of his crusades over time. As visitors traveled though the exhibits, trivia questions were revealed about Billy Graham, for example, what is his favorite NC sports team?
